What I really enjoy in my day-to-day job is, on the one hand, the connection with the physical sciences, but on the other hand, the fact that I have to collaborate with a lot of people around the globe to actually have a direct impact on society.

When I was 18, I went to Delft University and I became a petroleum engineer, and I spent many years in Shell and, you know, getting involved with building things. And here I am, 28 years later, and I’m responsible for building all this stuff in Shell. So, you know, there couldn’t be a better way, I think, to give meaning to the way I was educated.

We live in dynamic and uncertain times. And sometimes, that leads us, as a society, to taking our eye off the ball in regard of the significant issues and challenges that we face. But it’s exactly the significance and the importance of these issues…

And our commitment to solving them that should and will bring us together. In my view, this important commitment comes down to two grand challenges.

One is eradicating poverty, and the other one is sustaining a liveable climate. To address this vastly complex question, we need carefully, well thought through solutions that focus on the long term. And we need to all be involved.

And for this reason, we need to mobilise young people and give them the tools and the equipment to be able to address these questions in the long run.

How do we start a farm in the desert?

So let’s look at it another way. How do people collect clean water in the desert?

Is there an easy way to collect even more?

What fruits and vegetables can grow in the desert? How can we best use the energy sources available to us?

We imagined a future, where local communities, living in the desert are able to produce enough food to sustain themselves using resources available in their area.

We used tools from Shell’s NXplorers programme, to come up with ideas that will lead to a sustainable future.

We could remove the salt from the seawater.

We could grow beans, melons, peppers or even tomatoes!

The desert has plenty of sunlight. What if we used solar power?

The NXtools opens our minds towards different ways of solving the same problems and helps us figure out which one of our ideas would work better.

By looking at the bigger picture, we managed to better understand how everything is connected...

We created ideas that would help us to get to the future and developed action plans to implement the change!

We worked with engineers to design a machine that uses solar energy to collect clean water from the sea.

Using the sun as a renewable energy source, we evaporated enough seawater to use in a market garden.

NXplorers helped us develop our awareness, knowledge, and new thinking skills.

It helped us understand how to better use NXtools and NXthinking to solve real life problems.

Shell’s NXplorer programme teaches young people the complex and creative skills needed to tackle questions like, how to turn an arid, desert landscape, into productive agricultural land.

We focus on three steps: Explore, Create and Change ...
