Who we are

Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies, employing 93,000 people and with operations in more than 70 countries. We use advanced technologies and take an innovative approach as we seek to help the world build a sustainable energy future.

Shell is a customer-focused organisation, serving more than 1 million commercial and industrial customers, and around 32 million customers daily at more than 46,000 Shell-branded retail service stations.

Shell plc was established in 2022. The company name was changed from Royal Dutch Shell plc in 2022 but our history can be traced back to the first half of the 19th century.

Shell's headquarters is in London, United Kingdom. Our Chief Executive is Mr. Wael Sawan.

Powering Progress sets our strategy to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, generating value for our shareholders, our customers and wider society. As we move forward on this journey, we will power lives and respect nature while maintaining our core values of honesty, integrity, and respect for people. There are 4 pillars to our Powering Progress strategy.

  1. Achieving net-zero emissions: We are working with customers and others across key sectors of the economy to accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions. A net-zero world is where society stops adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
  2. Powering lives: We power lives by providing the vital energy people need, championing inclusion and contributing to local communities.
  3. Respecting nature: Powering Progress means respecting nature by protecting the environment, reducing waste and making a positive contribution to biodiversity.
  4. Generating shareholder value: Powering Progress generates value for our shareholders. It provides the financial strength to profitability transform our company, as we provide the energy the world needs today and transition to net-zero emission.

The figures used within the infographic refer to the numbers which have been included within the 2022 reporting cycle, as listed above. In this infographic we may refer to Shell's "Net Carbon Intensity", which includes Shell's carbon emissions from the production of our energy products, our suppliers' carbon emissions in supplying energy for that production and our customers' carbon emissions associated with their use of the energy products we sell. Shell only controls its own emissions. The use of the term Shell's "Net Carbon Intensity" is for convenience only and not intended to suggest these emissions are those of Shell plc or its subsidiaries.
