Shell Bitumen FreshAir ประกอบด้วยเทคโนโลยีนวัตกรรมสารเติมแต่งที่ได้รับการพัฒนาจากศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาระดับโลกของเชลล์ที่เมืองบังกาลอร์ ประเทศอินเดีย โดยสารประกอบที่ใช้ในการยับยั้งโดยตรงกับสารประกอบซึ่งเป็นแหล่งที่มาของก๊าซต่างๆ ฝุ่นละออง และโมเลกุลที่ปล่อยกลิ่น โดยปฏิกิริยาทางเคมีที่เกิดขึ้น ณ แหล่งกำเนิดในระดับโมเลกุลจะช่วยลดก๊าซและฝุ่นละออง หรือช่วยลดการระเหยของก๊าซและฝุ่นละอองดังกล่าว ซึ่งนำไปสู่การลดผลกระทบทางคุณภาพอากาศได้ในที่สุด

เชลล์ คือผู้ผลิตและส่งมอบผลิตภัณฑ์ยางมะตอยรายแรก ที่พัฒนานวัตกรรมเพื่อแก้ไขปัญหาคุณภาพอากาศเพื่อประโยชน์ทั้งผู้บริโภคและสังคม ซึ่งการเปลี่ยนมาใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์ยางมะตอย Shell Bitumen FreshAir นั้นมีผลต่อการลดอนุภาค PM₁₀ เทียบเท่ากับค่าเฉลี่ยของการปลูกต้นไม้ 16 ต้น² หรือเทียบกับการลดไนโตรเจนออกไซด์ เท่ากับการงดใช้รถยนต์ถึง 40 คัน³ ต่อกิโลเมตรของการปูยางมะตอยต่อปี
