ศาสตราจารย์ จอห์น รี้ด ผู้จัดการทั่วไป ศูนย์เทคโนโลยีผลิตภัณฑ์ยางมะตอยของเชลล์ กล่าวว่า “เรามุ่งมั่นในการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีของยางมะตอย เพื่อก้าวข้ามขีดจำกัดของผลิตภัณฑ์ ปัจจุบัน ศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาระดับโลกของเชลล์ที่บังกาลอร์ มีนักวิทยาศาสตร์ที่ทำการค้นคว้าวิจัยลึกถึงระดับโมเลกุล เพื่อให้ยางมะตอยมีคุณสมบัติในการการสร้างถนนที่นอกจากจะแข็งแรงทนทานมากขึ้น และใช้งานได้ยาวนานขึ้นแล้ว ยังจะช่วยประหยัดพลังงานได้อีกด้วย”

ศาสตราจารย์ จอห์นและทีมของเขา ยังได้พัฒนาเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยมุ่งที่จะเปลี่ยนถนนหนทางในโลกใบนี้ให้กลายเป็นพื้นผิวที่สามารถส่องสว่างได้ในความมืด สามารถชาร์จพลังงานให้กับรถยนต์ไฟฟ้าในขณะที่เราขับรถอยู่ และสามารถป้องกันการปล่อยมลพิษได้

ถนนอัจฉริยะในอีก 30 ปีข้างหน้าจะมีลักษณะอย่างไร?

ถนนกรองอากาศ: อีกหนึ่งการนวัตกรรมที่ไม่ไกลเกินความจริง คือ พื้นผิวถนนที่สามารถกักเก็บสสารที่เป็นอันตรายได้ ยกตัวอย่างเช่น ไนโตรเจนออกไซด์ หรือ มลพิษในอากาศ โดยเชลล์กำลังพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีที่สามารถดูดซึมฝุ่นละอองแบบ PM101 เช่น ควัน เขม่า ละออง และสสารอื่นๆ ที่เกิดจากการปล่อยก๊าซที่มาจากยานพาหนะ
