Helping contractors access finance in Nigeria

We have developed a partnership with four banks and an equipment broker in Nigeria which helps local contractors awarded contracts with Shell to gain easier and more favourable access to contract funding. From inception in 2012, these funding schemes have enabled about 220 contractors to access loans worth more than US $940 million. In 2015, 93% of contracts awarded by Shell companies in Nigeria (SCiN) went to local companies.

Helping smallholder farmers improve biofuels production standards

Shell is a major purchaser of biofuels, which we blend into fuel. We support rigorous sustainability standards which help ensure that our biofuels come from sustainable sources. In 2007 we introduced a policy that governs the way we work with our suppliers regarding sustainability. This requires our suppliers to comply with regulatory requirements, for example through international certification programmes.

When these are not available, we include our own environmental and social sustainability clauses into new and renewed supplier contracts. We work closely with our suppliers in developing a sustainable supply chain and review their progress on a regular basis.

Watch a film to see how our project with Patum Vegetable Oil in Thailand has helped farmers within our supply chain to become certified to international biofuel standards.
