Li Liu tells her story about being a working mother and how Shell has provided her with abundant opportunities to grow and develop into a passionate leader.
I’m Li Liu, OEM Brand & Sector Marketing Manager for Shell Lubricant in China. Even though I am only two weeks into this new position, I look forward to learning something new every day and seeing what kind of person it turns me into.
In my 4-year stint with Shell, I’ve travelled extensively to meet and engage with customers, balanced work and family, and absorbed a vast amount of new information like a sponge. Yes, it has all been challenging, but Shell has provided me a continuous learning environment where I am encouraged to maximize my potential. So far, my career development journey has been incredibly rewarding, I am motivated to accomplish more and ready to take on the next big challenge.
One of the main reasons why I chose to work at Shell after my MBA is that this is a large corporation that offers a great platform filled with opportunities for employees to develop personally and professionally. From sales to marketing, and from business development to policy and advocacy, Shell has always given me the space to pursue my career endeavours and personal aspirations of becoming a general manager and a passionate leader.
Looking back on the various job roles that I’ve taken, I now realise that one may fully demonstrate their potential and deliver great impact by not staying in the comfort zone, but by taking on and going beyond new challenges. If you have the drive, Shell will provide the stage for you to shine.
This is a photo of me with my Marine colleagues Ben Bradley and Alfonso Hernadez. Having a consulting background, I started working at Shell in a very different role as Key Account Manager before moving on to Global Pricing Manager for Marine Lubricants. This frontline experience has helped me to grow tremendously from being customer centric to improved customer relationship and customer-focused delivery.
This is the farewell card from my Marine colleagues when I moved to DS NBD. I left a message: “Boat well, boat Shell. Will always remember where I set sail. Thank you team. Go, pursue your dream.”
I have enjoyed working with a diverse, intelligent and awesome team at Shell. It is not just about the happy times that we have spent together, but about becoming true friends that share the same values and support each other during difficult times. I remember one time when I was feeling a bit down and started doubting my abilities for the role I was in, a Shell mentor gave me the following piece of advice: “Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished”. This helped me to believe in myself again and boost my confidence.
Last but not least, I appreciate the flexible work arrangement at Shell that enables me to balance my work and personal life. For example, my son had asthma when he was a toddler and we often visited the doctors. The flexible working hours really helped as I’m not evaluated by the time spent in the office, but by delivering what I promise to deliver.
This is my lovely family. My son is now six years old, strong, smart and happy!
